Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee that is drawing up articles of impeachment, said his panel has enough evidence against President Trump that a jury would convict in “three minutes flat.”
“We have a very rock solid case,” the New York Democrat said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. “The case we have if presented to a jury would be a guilty verdict in about three minutes flat.”
He also rejected claims made by the president and his Republican allies that there is no direct proof that Trump held up nearly $400 million in military aid to coerce Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky launch an investigation into a 2020 political rival.
“There is considerable direct evidence,” Nadler said, adding that “it ill behooves a president or his partisans to say you don’t have enough direct evidence when the reason we don’t have even more evidence is the president has ordered everybody in the executive branch not to cooperate with Congress in the impeachment inquiry.”
Nadler also said the White House has turned down an invitation for Trump to testify and for his lawyers cross-examine witnesses at House hearings.
The congressman said Trump and the Republicans have not mounted a credible defense.
“If he had any exculpatory evidence, they would have brought it forward. The fact that Republicans and the president have basically not contested the evidence at all … any fair judge would have to say that it has been proven thoroughly and uncontested,” Nadler said.
His panel on Saturday released a report that lays out the legal and historical case for impeachment and the foundation for Monday’s hearing.
“Impeachment is the Constitution’s final answer to a President who mistakes himself for a monarch. Aware that power corrupts, our Framers built other guardrails against that error,” the report said.
Nadler said on CNN that his committee hasn’t decided what to include in the articles of impeachment but will “take a lot of considerations into account.”
“What is the level of proof for the various allegations? How do they relate together? What is the level of support in our caucus and in the House for them? What might we persuade the Senate of. All of these things have to be taken into account, realizing again that the central allegation, it’s all of a pattern,” he said.
